“Rendez-Vous” in Beirut with Human Rights Film Festival
For the fourth year in a row, the Karama Beirut Human Rights Film Festival is back for another round of spectacular visual storytelling; and this time focusing on a major topic: Gender equality as per the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5.
Organized by Lebanese NGO “Art Factory 961”, the Festival – under the theme “Talk to Her” – is supported by the UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Beirut, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the regional office for the Middle East and North Africa (OHCHR-MENA), the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the embassies of Switzerland and the Czech Republic in Lebanon.

The Festival, which ran from 1 to 5 July, is a yearly film event that contributes, among other well-established and renowned human rights film festivals in the world, to spreading a cinema that denounces racism, hate discourse, discrimination and injustice. In addition to gender equality and women’s rights, the fourth edition also highlighted other human rights topics, including the rights of refugees, women empowerment, war, racism and others.

The festival features 24 films from Lebanon, the Arab World, Europe, America, and Asia, including 7 long documentaries, 4 short documentaries, 3 long features, 4 short feature films and 6 Animation films, followed respectively by Q&A sessions with 17 regional and international film directors who came to Lebanon. The programme also featured a major panel discussion addressing the law of personal status and its negative effects on women in Lebanon.

One week before the official opening, UNIC Beirut and Art Factory 961 held a Press Conference launching the Festival. The conference featured statements by H.E. Ambassador of Czech Republic to Lebanon Ms. Michaela Froňková, and festival director Haytham Chamass. The festival’s program manager Najwa Kondakji presented the films that would be screened during the five-day period. The conference and festival were disseminated extensively and picked up widely by media. UNIC Beirut also arranged for several interviews for the festival key staff with main TV stations, radios and news websites.
